Responsive Web Designing (RWD)

With the advent and the rapid growth of smartphones, tablets and other mobile devices, it became a necessity to come up with a technology that can adapt to multiple screens of multiple devices. The developers were in a dilemma about how to do the transition effectively to have better users experience. They found their answer in the form of Responsive Web Designing (RWD) technology. This approach of web designing makes desktop web pages adaptable, in response to the size of the screen or browser to view the pages. The system ensures that no data is lost in the transition between devices or screens.

Responsive Web Designing as a Trend

Initially, while the layout design was non compatible with multiple browsers. Netscape had other settings whereas IE internet explorer had different for resizing and adjusting. Overtime RWD has been highly adopted due to improved design workflows, an standardisation between designers and developers and lastly getting adapted globally.

How Does RWD work?

In RWD, the size of the viewport in terms of pixels or inches is determined. The components are then classified and viewed by the user as large, medium or small viewports. The texts can be read, and links have to be clicked without constantly trying to zoom in and out. Before RWD concept entirely different websites for the smaller screens, called mobile websites were created. Developers argue that using RWD tech accumulates more work. However in reality, it implies less work because only one website is being presented rather than altering a single website separately for each, a TV, laptop, mobile or tablet screen. Gathering analytical data is also simplified when only one website is in the scenario. Change management is better and much more.

There’s however one negative aspect about RWD, which is that, it homogenises web designs. RWD requires two web languages, namely HTML5 and CSS3 to make it work. This led to CSS being reworked on and most new sites have since looked similar, suggesting that RWD websites failed in forging diversity. It is, in fact, an tough task to create a new RWD template from scratch for every website, which was conveniently achievable with normal HTML websites prior to RWD.
